This past Sunday, I attended Clemson’s first TEDx event. I really didn’t know what to expect. What kind of speakers would they attract with the theme “The Voice You Are?” How many people would show up? And perhaps most importantly, would there be a red TED logo?
While there was no red TED logo (truly unfortunate bc I wanted a picture with one), the quality of speakers exceeded my expectations. I also was pleased with the moderators (Bethany and Anthony) who did an excellent job getting the audience excited and introducing the speakers.
By the end of the event, we had listened to 14 TED talks (11 live and 3 from TED.com). One of the pre-recorded ones that we watched was from Wofford’s president, Dr. Dunlap. In his talk about living a passionate life, you could almost feel the intensity of his thirst for knowledge. Concerning the live talks, the titles ranged from “What Drag Queens Taught Me About Teaching” to “Our Potential to Love” to “Lessons from the Silent Voice.” I was really surprised by how many of the talks were about personal transformations or journeys. However, thinking about the theme – “The Voice You Are” – this makes sense. Here are a couple of pictures that I snapped at the event (notice the lack of red TED logos… sad panda).
Overall, the event was a huge success and I’m excited for next year…. and possibly giving a talk of my own (depending on the theme).
